Green tea contains powerful antioxidants called polyphenols which have several health benefits. Polyphenols in green tea is extracted and sold commercially as nutraceutical or food supplement.

Green tea extract can also be called green tea polyphenols (GTP or GTPs). Green tea polyphenols includes epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG) and epicatechin (EC). EGCG accounts for majority of the content.

Caffeine is generally removed from green tea extracts due to its side effects and decaffeinated Green tea extract has higher value.

Polyphenols in green tea extract are known to reduce aging process. Anti-oxidation properties of Green tea extracts are many times effective than other known natural antioxidant like Vitamin C.

Side effects of Green tea extract

Consuming high amounts of concentrated green tea catechin – EGCG on long term can be considered unsafe. Researchers studying the toxicity levels of EGCG found that 200 mg per kilogram of body weight daily had no adverse effects.
